Bound and beaten, He speaks like the One who owns the courtroom. Torches cut through the darkness as armed men move toward the garden, and the disciples are barely awake when a familiar face steps out of the crowd. Judas has come, but not with threats or raised fists. He comes close enough to kiss Jesus, and in that moment betrayal, violence, fear, prophecy, and obedience all collide. Peter reaches for a sword, Jesus speaks of angels, the disciples run, and the Savior refuses to escape because the Scriptures must be fulfilled. We step into Gethsemane, the place where the weight of the cross begins to press upon Jesus before a single nail is driven. Here we see the Son of God sorrowful unto death, falling on His face before the Father, praying over the cup of judgment, and surrendering fully: “Not as I will, but as You will.” While the disciples sleep in weakness, Jesus watches, prays, and obeys. This passage shows us the true humanity of Christ, the seriousness of sin, the necessity of the cross, and the perfect obedience of the Savior who chose the Father’s will so sinners could be saved. Matthew 26:17-35 brings us to the final Passover meal before the cross, where Jesus takes the ancient symbols of deliverance and reveals their fulfillment in Himself. Around the table are disciples who love Him but do not yet understand their own weakness, and a betrayer who sits near the bread while his heart is far from Christ. Jesus takes the bread and cup and points to His body and blood, establishing the new covenant for the forgiveness of sins. Yet before the night is over, the disciples will scatter and Peter will deny Him. This passage reminds us that our confidence is not in our promises to Jesus, but in His blood shed for us.
